Swiss Television World Cup Trailer with CINEMA 4D

Swiss Television Uses CINEMA 4D to Create a Fast-Paced World Cup Trailer That Sweeps us From the Matterhorn to Soccer City.

The World Cup 2010 in South Africa is the most major sporting event of the year for Swiss Television. Their team of artists, lead by Creative Director Alex Hefter, created a comprehensive World Cup creative package, which was launched as a national campaign in Switzerland. At the heart of the campaign is the image trailer that takes the viewer on a fast-paced trip from the Matterhorn to the Soccer City stadium where the final match will be played.

After intensive conceptual and technical planning the team at Swiss Television needed only three days to film the trailer using a large-format green screen set at its own studios at RED ONE. Director Patrick Arnecke and lead artists Jürg Dummermuth and Florian Heger implemented CINEMA 4D from the very beginning for the creation of storyboards and set simulations. This made it possible to define exact requirements for set building as well as for lighting, camera and boom work, and eliminated the need for time-intensive re-builds during filming.

Two artists, four weeks until the deadline and a long item list in HD: Scheduling and budget for post-production of this expansive project were tight.

After cutting and conversion of the RED RAW material had been approved, Jürg Dummermuth and Florian Heger got started on the tracking using SynthEyes and created keys using Keylight in After Effects. They then added backgrounds one scene at a time, for which numerous photos, backplates and 2D/3D CG elements were used. The After Effects Exchange plugin proved to be invaluable for exporting the 3D camera to easily link 2D and 3D layers in After Effects.

A prime example of the fast and uncomplicated workflow is the shot in the desert: The artists were able to create animated dunes with just a few clicks using camera mapping combined with photos. The sand was blown through the air using a combination of Thinking Particles and the HAIR module, which helped anchor the soccer players into the scene visually. Florian Heger created the Mult-Passes, developed the grading and set up compositing to create the final shot.

The closing scenes in Soccer City were a particular challenge. Art Director Cordula Gieriet and Director Patrick Arnecke wanted to create a spectacular showdown in a packed stadium. To save time they purchased a simple 3D model of Soccer City and quickly modified it to fit their needs. Jürg Dummermuth used MoGraph to fill the stands with thousands of cheering fans. The Random Effector in MoGraph was used to breath life into the crowd. The playing field itself was created quickly and easily using the HAIR module. The animated CINEMA 4D camera was exported and the animals were placed onto the playing field in After Effects.

The campaign has been successfully running since May 27 on the networks SF, RTS and HD Suisse.
