So finally I can show this! I used the new arealights (BEST NEW FEATURE! imo) in combination with GI. You know how difficult it normally is to get an artifact free GI render out of Cinema, right? Well this one is an un-retouched, artifact-free GI render with Cinema. The only bits I did in Photoshop are color correction, a bit of glow, tiny bit of grain... But no retouching of any artifacts. There weren't any. I dont think I want to explain the entire process here because that's probably what I want to do on our next DVD (amongst other 9.5 things)... But basically I'm using the new area lights (which can be any shape now!) for the initial illumination. That's what creates all the nice accurate but very very soft area shadows (impossibly slow with the old version, much faster now). You can see that especially above the divider wall, where it meets the main wall on the left. You dont get such shadow casting using just GI alone. So area lights for initial illumination, then use GI to spread it around some more. I also used the color mapper to avoid any overblown-ness and I rendered it with 32bits per channel (hdri output) and loaded it into PS CS2, tweaked the exposure some more in there (so useful!), converted it to 16bit per channel... Then shrunk it down a bit, some sharpening here and there, convert to 8bit per channel and safe for web, done.
Ahyes, there's a lot of blurry reflection in the image - on the floor and the chair. That's also much faster now. You CAN actually use it for interiors now. Really helps with the realism. And the prepass no longer calculates unnecessary things like blurry reflection, which also speeds it up.
