The Hell of ’63 – Chilling Effects with CINEMA 4D

Approximately 400 effect shots are the result of 9 months of post-production in which the eight-member team from PLANET X FX tried re-created the hellish events of the 12th Frisian ‘Eleven Cities Tour’ (Elfstedentocht) of 1963.

In addition to the snowstorms and icy conditions, PLANET X FX was responsible for the creation of the completely computer-generated replicas of snow-covered Frisian cities like Stavoren and Hindeloopen. Typical Frisian elements such as windmills, farms and village sceneries were also added to the backdrop to the snowy landscapes shot in Lapland.

Also, the completely computer-generated maps of Friesland, charting the ice skaters’ route, proved an essential asset for the movie’s narrative.

In order to make the energy and enormity of such a national event tangible, an in-house developed system for crowd simulation was used to add thousands of extras to each scene. This was done using a suite of home-baked Thinking Particles modifiers and MoGraph elements to create crowds from live-action plates that were composited into animated geometry. Even the near break-up of the vast sheet of ice at the finish was re-created in spectacular fashion using 3D computer animation.

Some shots had to be seamless transitions from live material to full CG views of the scene so the camera could be pulled up into the clouds. Camera mapping helped the artists implement the features.

One of director Steven de Jong’s wishes was to visualize the icy tempest as a large white wolf. This resulted in a computer-generated 3D model of a wolf that literally leaves a trail of snow and fog, creating the so-called ‘hell’ from the movie’s title. A lot of effort went into creating convincing, dynamic clouds.

The up to 200 MB large scenes were rendered in 2K resolution with up to 20 Multi-Pass layers on 8 Quad-core systems and were composited in After Effects.

With the work on De Hel van ’63, a new, bold step has been made in the application of visual effects in Dutch cinema.

„I'm still amazed by how flexible it [CINEMA 4D] is, and in what different shapes you can mold it for each and every project.“
