Paste of Love

“Paste of Love” is a love story between a tube of toothpaste named Frank and an electric toothbrush named Nancy.

We thought of this admittedly strange storyline during a train ride from Frankfurt to Mainz (Germany) and quickly decided that we had to go through with this project and to complete this project in a single semester. It was important for us to approach this project in a well-organized manner. With this in mind we started the pre-production phase. We created several layouts for the bathroom and searched through catalogs for furniture design ideas so we could establish a look for our scene. At the same time, a detailed storyboard was created, followed by an animatic in which we defined the cuts. We gave this animatic to our composer, Ben Krahl, who used it to help compose the fitting score for our project. Designing Frank began with sketches, after which we modeled him in plaster to get a better impression of what he would look like in 3D. This step turned out to be a great help. When creating Nancy it was important that she be easily recognized as a toothbrush but also appear elegant and feminine.

A big challenge turned out to be the rigging of each character. Frank was given a spline IK rig and his facial expressions were created using morph targets. Soft IK combined with animations created in XPresso was used to make his “lock of hair” move dynamically. The biggest challenge in the creation of Nancy were the bristles of her brush. After a lot of experimenting we decided to create her bristles using the HAIR module. XPresso Expressions allowed us to gain control over the length, curvature and orientation of each bristle. This setup made it possible to animate Nancy’s “face”.

We took our time in creating the scene’s dimly lit atmosphere. We experimented a lot with the lighting, which we think is reflected in the final result.

We used Global Illumination and Ambient Occlusion for rendering and the Advanced Render module produced fantastic image quality. Compositing was done in After Effects and we benefitted greatly from the .aec file format we exported from CINEMA 4D. This made it easy to add dust and other details in After Effects.

"Creating this film was very challenging for us and we learned a lot from it. CINEMA 4D proved to be the perfect tool. The blood and sweat we put into this project was well worth the effort and we hope we continue to receive positive feedback!"
