"Our Man in Nirvana" - A diploma thesis project that was created by Jan Koester at the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television.

The story: It depicts how a rock star wakes up in Nirvana after an accident during a concert. In Nirvana he must then confront his past.










The film had to consist of two graphic styles: Asian shadow play for realistic elements; psychedelic 2D animation to depict Nirvana. Due to the large spatial nature of the environments both styles had to be done in 3D. It was clear from the very beginning that CINEMA 4D should be used for this project. Artist Jan Koester was already very familiar with CINEMA 4D and CINEMA 4D is also know for its fast rendering of Area Shadows - which was especially useful when rendering the Asian shadow play scenes.
The psychedelic parts of the movie also required complex lighting effects, including Caustics, and many projections with parametric textures that were rendered very quickly in 2D.

While the animated shadow play figures were kept very simple, the characters in the psychedelic parts of the movie had to have more depth and be more maneuverable. Using XPresso and Time Curves, a method was developed of rotating the 2D characters around their own axis without requiring any 3D modeling. The characters and background elements consisted of low-poly objects that were smoothed using HyperNURBS for rendering.

The characters were animated using the previous, simple IK, which more than sufficed for this project.
